What the installer does
Windows
- Delivered as a standalone setup program (.exe) for x64 and ARM64.
- Installs for the current user only, so administrator rights are normally not needed.
- Supports unattended install with
--silent. - Declared install modes: interactive and silent.
- Registers the
element://link protocol. - Upgrades install over the existing version.
Mac
- Delivered as a ZIP archive for Apple silicon and Intel.
- Installs the app
Element.appinto the Applications folder. - Requires macOS 13 or later.
- The app updates itself, so it may be newer than the version Homebrew lists.
- A full “zap” removal also deletes up to 11 support, cache and preference locations in your home folder.
Overview
Element is a Matrix-based end-to-end encrypted messenger and secure collaboration app. It’s decentralized for digital sovereign self-hosting, or through a hosting service such as Element Matrix Services. Element operates on the open Matrix network to provide interoperability and easy connections.
