Windows

  • Delivered as a standalone setup program (.exe) for x64.
  • Installs for all users on the PC, which normally requires administrator rights.
  • Supports unattended install with --silent.
  • Declared install modes: interactive and silent.
  • Associates with the file types .ova, .ovf, .vdi, .vhd, and .vmdk.
  • Needs this winget package first: Microsoft.VCRedist.2015+.x64.
  • Upgrades install over the existing version.

macOS

  • Delivered as a disk image (.dmg) for Intel (x64) and Apple silicon (ARM64).
  • Runs the installer package VirtualBox.pkg; package installers usually ask for an administrator password and can place files anywhere on the system.
  • On uninstall, Homebrew forgets installer package receipts and deletes 1 extra file.
  • A full “zap” removal also deletes up to 7 support, cache and preference locations in your home folder.

VirtualBox is a general-purpose full virtualization software for x86_64 hardware (with version 7.1 additionally for macOS/Arm), targeted at laptop, desktop, server and embedded use.

It features a very user friendly graphical user interface and is available for many popular operating systems (Linux, Windows, macOS and Solaris). Flexible networking setup and interactive performance are the strong points.

Anyone with the need to run multiple operating systems simultaneously with some basic knowledge about PCs and operating system installation can use it to reduce effort with a large number of tasks including software testing.
