What the installer does

Windows

  • Delivered as a standalone setup program (.exe) for x64 and x86.
  • Installs for all users on the PC, which normally requires administrator rights.
  • Supports unattended install with /VERYSILENT /NORESTART.
  • Declared install modes: interactive and silent.
  • Registers the malwarebytes:// link protocol.
  • Upgrades install over the existing version.

macOS

  • Delivered as a macOS installer package (.pkg) for Apple silicon and Intel.
  • Runs the installer package Malwarebytes-Mac-5.28.4.4244.pkg; package installers usually ask for an administrator password and can place files anywhere on the system.
  • The app updates itself, so it may be newer than the version Homebrew lists.
  • On uninstall, Homebrew asks the app to quit, stops background services, and forgets installer package receipts.
  • A full “zap” removal also deletes up to 9 support, cache and preference locations in your home folder.

Homebrew note shown after install: malwarebytes requires a kernel extension to work.
